The original key and lock originated around 6000 + years ago in Ancient Babylon. I suppose we don’t have to guess why the idea of keys were conceived.
Most likely it was observed that theft and imminent danger were imposed upon the people of that time. Quite naturally, even then data was processed and invention spawned in the minds of innovators.
I continue to use analogies to find ways to help others realize that data shaped the foundation of our world. The observation of data from a simple wooden key that had so many faults that lead to thousands of years of innovation that we see in a modern key and lock.
We have further evolved to have a digital lock that can be opened with a code or a key-card. Inventors observed ways to make the process more efficient and convenient.
If danger is our focus it takes less time to use a keycard or a code than having to reach for a set of keys. A few seconds or even minutes matter...
If looking at a one dimensional way of growth, without the use of data, you will remain using the wooden key of ancient Babylonians.
A key that breaks easily that can no longer be used. Furthermore, you will leave plenty of room for the competition to break in and dominate you.
